The Kiss of Deception by Mary E Pearson

I seem to of fallen into a habit of reviewing the books that captivate me, and absolutely blew me away; some I expected it from, others pleasantly surprised me. This was one that I had looked forward to for a long time, but was by no means expecting to be as caught and kept awake as much as this novel did to me. Was honestly so sad when I knew I wouldn’t have any reading time for twenty four hours, and was going to have to leave the book closed. As soon as I got home I sprinted through the rest of this fabulous novel. A Princess that has had her life dictated to her, when she wanted to spend time with her brothers and have the choice of marrying for love, is left no choice but to abandon her life as a royal when forced into an arranged marriage. Between countries that are in disagreement, Lia’s marriage to the Prince of Dalbreck was meant to join the two kingdoms in alliance, but when she starts a new life as a barmaid, unrest increases.

Not going to lie, I was looking forward to this series for the high fantasy element. The Kiss of Deception, I actually felt wasn’t as fantasy filled as I was hoping, but the characters more than made up for it. When the first daughters have the chance of developing ‘the gift’, something that not everyone still believes in, I feel that this series has the potential of becoming more magical!

Normally, I really don’t like too big a romance, and especially not a romantic troupe. But this Love Triangle! Wow, this one had me gripped. With a princess, an assassin sent to kill her, and the prince she was meant to marry, you would not expect the romance that follows. Honestly, still now I don’t know who I want Lia to end up with in the end.

Easily, my favourite part of this novel was the mystery of who was the assassin and who was the prince. You end up thinking you know who is who, and then something will happen to change your mind; you change who you want her to end up with, so that when you find out who is who, you shock yourself.

Lia is by far the most captivating character I have read about so far this year, and am currently waiting for the second book to arrive. As soon as it does I will be reading it!

This was the most easy five star read for me in a very long time!
