Going into the new year, I was coming off from two fantastic reading months; with my new reading challenges set, my bullet journal reading tracker set up, I was hoping to kick off the year with another fabulous reading month. Well, that just didn’t happen. After just 3 weeks, I was already behind with my GoodReads goal, which nudged me to try and catch up with some quick reads. Anyway, this is what I read during January. I stared of the year so well, reading my first book of the year in just 3 days. The Hundredth Queen by Emily R King, is a book that has had my eye since it was first released, but I had heard such mixed reviews that I had put off buying my copy. It ended up being a really great read. Although there was problems with it, it was highly enjoyable and a quick light hearted read. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars in the end, and ordered the sequel, The Fire Queen, straight away ready for me to jump into.
Although I did then start Falling Kingdoms, I somehow just stopped reading. So it wasn’t until the 18th, when I realised I was behind on my GoodReads goal, that I then picked up the second volume of the Rick and Morty comic books. I love these comics and they are such quick reads, perfect for catching up on reading goals. Although this one was nothing special, I gave it 3 out of 5 stars, and will be getting hold of the next ones as soon as I have money.
Honestly I do seem to go through fazes of just flying through my comics and graphic novels. So next, I picked up the first three volume bindup of One Piece, a graphic novel series all about pirates and a boy made of Rubber. his was so easy to read and such a fun little story, again I now need to pick up the next one in the series.
Finally, I finished off Falling Kingdoms, and I am so glad that I did! This book was such a fabulous start to a series that I can not wait to fly through all of. So far this is easily my favourite read of the month. Full of magic, mystery and politics. Falling Kingdoms is my first 5 star read of the year, and I have confidence that the rest of the series will be soon to follow.
I’m trying to make sure that I read an adult novel each month so that I can get through some of them this year. As I’m still really in a YA fantasy mood this month, I thought Id jump into the shortest adult book that I own, being The Grownup by Gillian Flynn. This was such an odd one, the first two thirds were creepy and amazing, but then it just ended so blandly and predictably. This was just a 3 star read for me because it just didn’t have a worthwhile ending.
So I didn’t manage to reach my target of 6 books this month, but 5 books are certainly not bad when I lost my motivation to read for a bit. Hoping to hit 7 books in February to make up for it.
What did you read?
Five books isn’t bad at all! Hoping you can reach seven in February *fingers crossed for you*
