I went into this with very little expectations, for a start for some reason I thought it was going to be a fantasy rather than a Sci-Fi when I started, and then I just expected the normal very tropy Young Adult novel. However it very quickly had me glued to its pages, and I devoured absolutely every second of it. Full of strong characters, beautiful settings and really twisty turning plot, this is not one to miss out on. I picked this up to be another nice easy going YA novel, but it turned out to be so much more; the pace of this novel was just perfect, although the beginning was full of the same old YA plot line, it moved on so quick it did not matter. From a quarter onwards this novel held a plot so very unique and beautiful that the classic young girl has to be trained and travel to court plot, could be forgiven.
The characters, well just wow! Nemesis was everything you could want a main protagonist to be; while her development as a person just made her all that much more. Watching her as she gained her emotions and realising just how to use them and deal with the impacts was breath taking and heart wrenching. At moments I felt truly sorry as she was having to work out how to release the huge build up of emotions. And then to work out the difference in the love she feels for both her girl and the love interest.
Tyrus, beautiful Tyrus; his whole character was just something else. So dark and hidden to begin, and yet all his motives feel so admirable. I can’t go into his character too much as its all part of the plot but just you wait for the way he develops, it will have you heart pumping.
Set in outta space, the setting was just mesmerising. From the space ship to the beautiful human planets, with a giant library, a salt bath, and ceilings that look like the sky; the spaceship is somewhere that anyone would want to go (although maybe under different control).
Despite my expectations I adored this novel, I was fully within its grasp from start to finish, and it left me not having any idea what to pick up next. A very uncomplicated full five stars is just what this novel deserves; The Empress is now in the post and will be my next read as soon as it arrives.
