Tips for Chronic Pain…

If you have been around here for any length of time, it should be no news to you that I have been suffering with chronic pain for quite a long while. I have Fibromyalgia and EDS (Ehlers- Danlos Syndrome), both conditions where a major symptom is constant pain, that although is always there it can vary.Mental Health

For most people that suffer from chronic pain, and it is mostly just about finding ways to deal and cope with it. These can be treating the physical symptoms as well as dealing with how it effects you emotionally in your day to day life.

Me personally, I have a range of medication, most being pain killing medications, such as tramadol and morphine, but I also have Naproxen to try and deal with the source. In addition I also have medication for depression that is caused partly because of my pain levels and how it effects my life.

Now not everything works for everyone, and when it comes to medication you have to go through your doctor as they are the only ones that will know what is best for your personal situation. But there are things you can do for yourself.

Baths are a great way of relieving muscular pain. This can be caused from chronic pain, or even just sports injuries; siting and relaxing in nice warm water can work wonders for an achy back or legs. Its no miracle cure, but I have a bath before bed every night as I find it can just dull away some of the pain in my legs.

Another method that I use a lot is heat packing. Now some people find that ice packing works better, but they are both basically the same thing just opposite – I know that makes no sense. Essentially all you do is pack the painful area with either a hot water bottle or an ice pack, depending on what you find helps. So for me, each night I will pack my back, hip and sometimes legs and shoulder with hot water bottles; this eases off a lot of my pain just before I go to bed so that I can rest, relax and hope for a good nights sleep.

Although this one may be obvious, a lot of people don’t always think about it, and to be fair I was one of those that didn’t really think about it for the longest time. Change your clothes so they don’t put pressure on your pain spots. So my hips are a major pain spot for me, and I always found that jeans were too painful if they were around my hip. Nowadays I have discovered that I am better off with leggings that go over my hips and grip nearer my waist. I know that this is worse for some people so you really do just have to work out what is best for you; it took me trying several different styles of trousers to find something that wasn’t so painful, and it really it just trial and error.

Then finally, distraction. I know that this sounds super obvious but also many sufferers are probably looking at this being like ‘REALLY?’. I know that this can be a really challenge at the very best of times, but it really can be a real help. Ways to achieve this can be different for each person; for me its best when I read. I can sink into a new world and be absorbed for a little while until Im next due pain relief, or something. I know that others find it best to be drawn into movies, or video games and even some that find that learning new things can really help. It is just a matter of being busy so that you can just sit and get yourself worked up and down about your pain; this will never take away the pain, but it can sometimes just push it to the back of your brain for a little while so you don’t get as annoyed by it.

They are all my tips for dealing with Chronic Pain, I am always happy to talk to people about it, whether it be exchanging techniques or if you just want more information, plus I’m always here if you just need to have a moan and get it off your chest.

Lets Chat.. Getting Fed Up Now..

I feel like I have been doing one of these pieces each week lately, but I am just constantly needing to have a little bit of a whinge and moan, that I am being batted back and forth from doctor to hospital to doctor. Sometimes I think its not the being ill that gets me so fed up, but rather that its the people not believing me, telling me that my body will recover, just to wait a few days and be in a worse state. I am rather good at listening to my body, I have lived with my disabilities and my immune system trouble for my entire life, I know when its struggling.Mental Health

Now I am rather good at dealing with not feeling well, I am a master at bed resting and I rarely complain about having to do it; I actually have rather a lot of fun doing my bed rest diaries posts. But this time around, I am with a new GP doctors surgery, and I truly feel that to some degree I am just not being listened to. I began with a chest infection that developed into Pneumonia, and then when that cleared I ended up with a Kidney Infection. Long story short, I was sent to hospital to be admitted as I was starting to feel worse not better, they then discharged me after less than 24hours with Morphine for the pain, and told to wait till I finished the medication.

So here we are, having finished said antibiotics, and honestly, cross my heart, feeling a lot worse. I have truly got to the point where my entire body is completely exhausted. Just sitting writing this is really wearing me out unbelievably so. Anyway, back to the doctors this morning, I have a raging fever, high blood pressure, and super tachycardic.  So I have a kidney infection… STILL. So new antibiotics, and another bottle of morphine. Then back to the doctors on Friday if still feeling horrid.

Don’t you ever just wish a doctor would listen to you, when you know that something is up with your body, and you know that it isn’t coping and that you are in need of help.

Anyway, that’s my little moan for today. Hopefully this will be the last one for the month at least, but I cant promise anything.

What annoys you the most about the doctors and being ill?

Historical Fiction Recommendations 2019

A bit of a different one today, as I have been doing my most anticipated releases in books lately, but this post is all about books that are already out and readily available. Today I will be letting you know what books I would mostly recommend in the historical fiction genre; previously I have shared my recommended Fantasy novels, that you can read here, this is still reasonably current so there aren’t many more I would add to this.

When it comes to historical fiction, I certainly do have the authors that I adore, and I rarely find another historical author who I can fall in love with their work, but this list is going to show that it can happen.

One of the biggest examples of me discovering a historical fiction novel that I have absolutely loved, by a new to me author has to be The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. This is such a dark and horrific story; it truly does make you heart hurt and makes a very thought provoking read. Based on a true story, it is the love story between a Jewish man and woman in the Auschwitz concentration camp, and how they managed to defy all odds in order to find each other and fall in love in one of the darkest places and times in the history of this world. I highly recommend this, although it does have trigger warnings for rape and abuse. img_0765

Another is a book I was introduced to by a publisher as I accepted the book in return for an honest review, and I honestly ended up absolutely loving the entire thing. The Orphan’s Tale by Pam Jenoff, is another heart wrenching story based during World War II, however this time it follows the story of a young woman who has had her baby taken away and she has been shunned because of having a Nazi soldiers child. With a 1900′ travelling circus during such a dark time, this makes for a really fascinating read; again I am in belief that this is based upon real events. You can read my full review of this book here, to see my full thoughts.

Now onto one of my absolute favourite authors that I think is a favourite of all time; Ben Kane, and in specific his The Forgotten Legion series. I will put my hands up and say that I have not actually managed to finish off the series quite yet, but the first book in this series, is easily my favourite of all of his books that I have read (and that’s quite a few). Following three separate stories that all collide during medieval Rome; this one I found to have the most amazing ability to make you get attached to the characters and truly long for them to achieve and be in the best outcome. That being said, I would highly recommend any and all of Ben Kane’s books.10305798

Most if not all of you will know that I have, for as long as I remember, had a really passion for anything the Philippa Gregory has written, especially her Tudor and Plantagenets series. Trying to choose just the one book of hers to recommend in this post actually turned out to be quite a challenge, as I feel that almost all of them are books that everyone should read at some point. However, when pushed I would have to suggest The King’s Curse. The Story of Margaret Pole, from her childhood to her death, it truly is one of her top works.15849910

Truly there are so many  other books that I could include in this, but I have narrowed it down to this for the time being. Although this is definitely a post that I will be doing again at some point, likely this time next year. Please let me know of any other genres that you would like me to do a recommendations post for and would certainly love to do it.

What are your favourite historical fiction authors?

Mid Year University Update 2019

Its back round to that time of year where we are half way through the university year, meaning that I am mid way with my current module. This year, I am doing a introductory module on Childhood psychology, and first impressions are that I am absolutely loving it. However this module has not gone as planned so far. Mental Health

So I started this module the first time around last year, but I had to take a break as I was having issues because of having to go on strong pain medication; thankfully though I managed to bank my first two essay scores. This means that technically don’t start studying until this week; however I started at the same time as everyone else, wanting to complete the entire unit as normal. Mostly this was because I felt like I have little recollection of last year, so I wanted to start from scratch.

This was going very well, but as you may of picked up, the end of last year did not go to my plan. I had to drop everything for three weeks in order to support my partner in his time of ill health, this did set me back a bit. As always, I then followed by being ill myself, a number of chest infections, the development of pneumonia and then a kidney infection. Still now I am not doing too great, currently remain on antibiotics and even strong pain medication to normal.

Back to study, this means that I am much over a month behind schedule now, and still not in a position to get back to working on it. I am lucky to have a very supportive tutor, but I am not honestly sure how I am going to manage to get caught up.

That being said, I cant wait to pick my study book back up. I am determined that I will get back to it the moment I have my energy back, or at least have some focus. Then in October I will be picking up my next module, I will get this degree finished, I am certain of it.

Are any of you in university? Or studying at college? How are your courses going?

Most Anticipated Thriller Releases of 2019

This is the final of my most anticipated book releases for the year posts, and I am super excited for all of these ones; lately I have been really, really enjoying my Thriller reads, even more so than my fantasy books for a little while. Thankfully I have already had the pleasure of getting my hands of a handful of these, and can say that I can not wait for everyone else to pick them up so we can chat about them.

The first one, and one that I have already read, is the truly amazing The Lost Man by Jane Harper. She is the author of the fabulous Dry and Force of Nature, and this one, although different, stands up to the excellence of both of these. All her novels are set in Australia which makes for a really cool and unique setting, If you are stuck indoors in the cold English weather, then I highly recommend picking this up when it comes out and transporting yourself into a much nicer, extreme climate. I am going to have my review up for this on the 4th of February as part of the blog tour. 40692028

Another, that I again am part of the blog tour for in February, is After the Eclipse by Francesca Dorricott. A thriller of abducted girls, all revolving around the event of a solar eclipse. I will be picking this up in the next couple of days and it looks like it will be a really good read that I just cant wait to get my hands on. 38329334

Next is the next Alice Blanchard books, Trace of Evil, which is due to be released at the end of the year. I adored her A Breath After Drowning book last year, it was one of my top books of the year, and I highly recommend it to any thriller lovers out there. The hope is that this will be just as good as her previous work as I have high expectations for this book.

Once again from an author I have read and loved this year, we have A Shroud of Leaves by Rebecca Alexander, another novel about archaeologist Sage. I loved A Babys Bones, and this is a follow on from that, so I can not think of a reason why I am not going to adore this book as well. This should be out mid Spring I believe from the lovely Titan Books. 42469516

So those are my most anticipated releases in the Thriller genre, I can not wait for these; although I have already had the honour of reading the Lost Man. Come February, you really should pick it up!

Are there any thriller releases that you are excited for this year? I would love to know which ones so I can pick them up.

Skin Care for Sensitive Skin

I have always struggled with having incredibly sensitive skin, regularly having reactions to products that I had previously found I was okay with. But thankfully I seem to of found some products that I don’t seem to react to which I use each day to ty and improve my skin.

However that being said, I have found one of my best tricks for not reacting to products is to switch it up everything now and again. So, my three facial products are the same constantly, but I have a range of moisturisers that I rotate around in order to keep my skin healthy but not have come out in reactions to products. Each of these I find are gentle to the skin, while also smelling and feeling absolutely gorgeous. Some are better for the Summer months when you want your legs out, while others are quicker at soaking in making them better to use with trousers, but none of them irritate my very sensitive skin.

The first part of my daily face care is to use a face wipe; my go to ones are the Simple Spotless Skin Quick Fix Cleansing Wipes. These are just so soft, and leave your skin feeling so refreshed. I have previously tried several of the Simple face wipes, but I have found some of them can be quite rough; these however aren’t and I find they do wonder for my spots and eczema. They are a touch more expensive than others but well worth it if you ask me. 169335

I then follow this by using the Simple Kind to Skin Soothing Facial Toner. This just leaves my skin feeling so nice, fresh and just lovely and ready for the day. Generally I will do this both morning and night, but I find this sets me up for the day as I don’t wear makeup, I like to feel that my face is clean and well cared for. I got this on a deal from Ocado, so I actually managed to get hold of 6 months worth for just a £5, each bottle lasts about 2 months, so actually works out very cheap.

Then to finish off my face care routine I use the simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Light Moisturiser. I have been using this for as long as I can remember, and that should be all I have to say about it. Its super quick for sinking in so doesn’t leave your skin feeling damp, and its not at all oily.

Now onto my selection of moisturisers; my most commonly used one is actually one I borrowed off my Nan once when my eczema got bad, and I have actually found it to be my absolute favourite. Its the Vaseline Intensive Care Essential Healing Lotion, you can pick it up almost anywhere, and it smells absolutely beautiful. Definitely I use this one almost every day, as it drys nice and quick, and is very good at keeping eczema or dry skin away. 083960

My other regular moisturiser is absolutely gorgeous for using in the Summer, especially if I’m going to have my legs out for whatever reason. The Happy Naturals Argan Oil and Sweet Orange Nourishing Body Butter. This is definitely the slightly more expensive option, but oh my is it gorgeous; almost good enough to eat. I got my first tub for my birthday a couple of years ago, and am still now only on my second tub; they really do last quite a long while making them worth the little bit extra money. 534435

Other options that I don’t use as often, but will grab if I get a voucher or they are on a deal, are any of the body butters from The BodyShop or Lush. I love both of these shops so much, but I don’t live close to either, and find that between that and the cost its just not worth my while. But every now and again I will treat myself to a nice one every now and again, if I go into Cambridge with my partner or something.

Generally my have to factors, are that they have to be super soft and sensitive on my skin, and ideally vegan. Although I do not follow a vegan diet, I do not see the need for animal products in skin care. So any suggestions you have that follow this, I would love to hear.

If you would like to hear more about skin care and other beauty related topics from me then please do let me know?

Most Anticipated Games

Now this one is a bit different to my most anticipated book releases as not all of these will be coming out this year; some have been out for a while, but they are the ones that I can not wait to my hands on this year whether I get gifted them from family or save the money to treat myself. You may not know that I am much of a gamer, but I have been getting into it more and more, plus my partner is a pretty big gamer so its something we enjoy.

Assassins Creed is my big weakness, I absolutely love these games. Dad got me the new Odyssey game for Christmas which may just be the best one I have played so far. I love how much more open this one is, you have to stumble across the quests and explore the worlds; its just so much more immersive. With being ill I haven’t been feeling up to spending some real time on it for the last few weeks, but I really can not wait. Hopefully in this next week of resting I will get more time to sit and play.

I will most likely treat myself to another Assassins Creed game at some point mid year time; I would love your recommendations as to which one you think I should get? I already have Odyssey, Origins, and have completed Syndicate, would love to hear your thoughts. Currently I play on an Xbox One so ideally would like it to be on that platform.

My other gaming love is The Sims. Since I was a little child I have been playing the original Sims, and played each one since until now I have the Sims 4. I got it in 2017 but didn’t manage to play too much since then, but with Sims 4 Get Famous coming out this year, I will definitely have to get it and get back into it. Have to admit, I was very unsure about getting Sims 4 on the Xbox as I no longer have a gaming computer and it did turn out to be better than I though. However for some reason it just was not the same, I have not found myself getting as into it as I used to with the PC versions. I think it may be because I would play it on my laptop while watching films previously. I currently don’t have any of the add ons, so please let me know which ones you would recommend I invest in?

The final game that I am truly hoping that I get for my birthday this year is the Lego Harry Potter Xbox One games. I used to play these years ago on the old Play Station and up until very recently I believed that they were not available on the Xbox. It was only when me and my partner were looking through the second hand games just after Christmas that I spotted that they have now been remastered for the Xbox. I am so excited, I really do want to pick these games up again, they pretty much were my whole childhood.

So those are the games that I am really looking forward to getting engrossed and obsessed over in 2019. I am so excited for all of these, but I would also love to hear your recommendations?

My partner has said I should try out Red Dead Redemption as he adores that game, so think I will be giving it a go, but any other suggestions are highly appreciated.

What games are you looking forward to playing this year?

Lets Chat… Another A&E trip

Well, another bit of a break from my January planning– interrupted by me spending another day in the hospital. What should of been a simple doctors appointment led to my doctor calling the hospital and asking them to admit me; thankfully they have decided against this for now.schizo

So what’s happened? I was just feeling very, very tired again, and in a lot of pain in my side; tests have shown that the infection is in fact actually clearing itself up, but that does raises the question of what is making me feel so unwell?

From tests today we have found that my inflammation makers are high but otherwise my bloods are normal, Ive got a slightly high temperature, and high heart rate and blood pressure. Im very reactive to any pressure on my right loin, and my normal pain reliefs are not touching it. The current plan is to use the morphine tonight to get through and have a decent nights sleep, and then back at 8am for CT scan to see if they can see the problem.

The likely possibilities are either kidney stones or a cyst somewhere in the kidney area. Here’s to the hope that I am not kept in tomorrow (although today for when you are seeing this), and that this doesn’t stop my full month of blogging.

Funny moment today was taking out a canula, after having morphine and blood spurting everywhere and just laughing. Nurses went into a panic trying to fix it. What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you in A&E?

I really am one for focusing on the positives while I’m not well, you’ll never get better if you just feel sorry for yourself. But it certainly helps that the staff were really lovely, went to find me my favourite biscuits after I passed out.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Books

Paperback Vs Hardback

Now everyone has their preferences, from hardback to paperback, and then nowadays you also have audiobooks and e-books; each have their negatives and positives, and it is really just a matter of what works best for you.

Personally, my favourite is really rather clear; you just cannot beat a nice new hardback book. I read a real mix of paperback, hardback and e-books, but every single time I will prefer a hardback. There is just something so satisfying about siting on the sofa with your legs up, and big hardback book sitting on your legs; holding itself open so that you can enjoy your cuppa tea while staying immersed in the story.

Now I can appreciate the practicality of an eBook. The ability to carry around 100s if not more books, with just the weight of one small portable tablet is just perfect for anyone who travels a lot, or even just if you only have a small home and want to have access to many books whenever it may strike your mood to read them. However, I have quite a major issue with eBooks. Not only do you not get the same reading experience, but you also have the problem of that they can run out of battery. Up until my recent move I lived somewhere where I would quite often find myself having a power cut, which of course makes it not possible to charge up an ereader. You never have that problem with a good old physical book. I am bad enough as it is at remembering to charge up my phone and laptop- things I use every day- let alone trying to remember to charge up my book.

Audiobooks have simple disadvantages to eBooks really, they require an item of electronics that will need regular charging; but I also have one other issue with audiobooks. It is one that I really do want to get over, as I want 2019 to be a year where I start listening to more audiobooks. My main issue with audiobooks is that I struggle to follow them, I will think that I am paying attention, but then when I stop, I will be unable to remember a thing that had gone on in the book I’d just listened to. Since a child, I have always had an issue with remember things that I had heard, I have much more of a photographic memory than I do an audio memory; I need to improve this somehow, advice is very welcome?

So that rules out the electronic versions of reading, leaving paperback or softcover, and hardback books. Now both have their positives, and you know my easy favourite, but I’ve not said what I have against paperbacks. Well the truth is, I don’t have anything against them, they are light weight, generally cheaper, and more compact for transporting around. The truth is, I just like the excitement that I get from a new hardback book, knowing that its a new book, looking at the maps and knowing that this book will be epic.

That’s my brief thoughts on which format of book I prefer, what are your thoughts?

My Recent Games on my Phone

I have always been a bad one for playing games on my phone, but in the past year I have become much worse with it, I have been getting highly addicted to games and finding myself completing them in a matter of days. So here I am going to let you know the ones that I have completed and since deleted, one I have played and decided I didn’t overly like, and ones I am currently playing. Hey, if any of you have any long waits coming up in cars or waiting rooms, it may give you some ideas. I do just want to say that I do not pay a single penny on any of the mobile games I play, they really are just something silly to sit and do when I am not feeling too well and just want to keep my brain occupied.

So there are two that I have actually completed all the challenges on and have hence deleted. The first is a game called Slices, a game where you are presented with different sections of a pie, and you have to try and complete as many full pies as possible. Its really quite straight forward, but you’d be surprised how much it has you thinking sometimes. Although you can just play it constantly, after I completely all the challenges, I found I actually got rather bored by it, which is why I then deleted it. However if you like games that get your brain thinking then I would definitely have a look at it.

The next is Shoot n Merge. Again this is a puzzle game a bit like Tetris, you have a moving ceiling and you have blocks with numbers. You have to match numbers together for them to merge into a larger number. This one was super addictive, but again once you have completed the challenges it does start to get to be a bit repetitive and  I lost the enjoyment from it. But it certainly kept me entertained for a month or so.

Now there are only two games that I have played and decided that I didn’t like so deleted. Both I just found got a bit boring and I never was wanting to play. Peak- Brain Training, was a really cool app, but what I hadn’t realised when I downloaded it was that it only lets you play so many games a day. You can get around this by paying, but as I said, I refuse to pay for these games as they are just boredom breakers for me. This was quickly deleted. The other was Snake V Blocks; I wont lie, I deleted this out of frustration. Its so addictive, but once you get stuck on it, it just seems like there is no way around it, so I angrily deleted this one. I would definitely contemplate reuploading this one in the future.

So the games that I am hooked on at the moment are very different although again they are both number based. Picture Cross is amazing, its like a picture jigsaw that you have to use number patterns in order to work out. This again gets really annoying when you get stuck on one, but once you get yourself over it, it is so very addictive. I am in love with this game, and am worried that I am starting to get to the end of the challenges so will ultimately be having to say goodbye to this one soon. If you know of any others that are as good this one then PLEASE let me know.

The other that I am playing on and off is a game called 2 for 2. This is another number game where you have to join numbers up in order for them to merge. Again highly addictive until you get stuck and then it becomes ultimate infuriating; but I have now come down to the last few challenges, but they are so tough that I think that it may take me a while.

I do still have Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery and Farmville downloaded, as these are still games that I will probably go back and continue with at some point, but at the moment I have not been in the mood for them. I also have Cooking Craze downloaded that I have been loving, but I just have not had the concentration to be playing it lately, but hopefully when Im more on the mend I will get back to this one.

In terms of next games to start playing, I have three others ready and waiting to go. They are Tiny Tower, Bloxorz, and VV Origins 2. Let me know if you have played any of these games and what you thought off them?

Please let me know of any other free mobile games that you have enjoyed, I would be very interested to try some more as I do seem to get through them rather quick at times. What have you been playing?
